Quarterback carousel comes full circle for Sam Darnold as he inks a deal with the 49ers.
The San Francisco 49ers have signed former Carolina Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold to a one-year deal, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.
Darnold, the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, spent the past two seasons with the Panthers, starting 11 games in 2021 and 11 games in 2022.
Darnold to Backup Purdy in San Francisco
The 49ers have chosen Sam Darnold as their backup quarterback behind starter Brock Purdy, coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed.
Darnold is expected to compete with Nate Sudfeld for the backup role, but Shanahan said that Darnold is the favorite to win the job.
The 49ers signed Darnold to a one-year, $1.5 million deal with incentives that could push the value of the contract to $3.5 million, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Darnold Excited to Join the 49ers
Darnold said he is excited to join the 49ers and learn from Shanahan and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.
He said he believes the 49ers have a chance to be a contender in the NFC and that he is looking forward to the opportunity to compete for a starting job.
"I'm excited to be here," Darnold said. "I think this is a great opportunity for me. I'm going to come in and work hard and try to earn a starting job."
